Detroit Man Charged In Westland Injury Car Accident

Detroit, MI - Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Ryan Edward Smith, 34, of Detroit, in connection with a non-fatal car crash that injured a 25-year-old Highland Park man, and a 27-year-old pregnant Inkster woman.

On March 25, 2023, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Westland police officers were around Inkster Road and Warren Road when they initiated a traffic stop on the defendant's vehicle. As officers exited their vehicle, it is alleged that the defendant fled from the scene at a high rate of speed southbound on Inkster Road. While Defendant Smith was fleeing, it is also alleged that he disregarded a traffic light and drove through the intersection of Ford Road and Inkster Road when he crashed into the victims' vehicle, non-fatally injuring them. Medics arrived on scene and transported the victims and Defendant Smith to a local hospital for treatment.

Ryan Edward Smith has been charged with one count of Second-Degree Fleeing, one count of Third-Degree Fleeing, one count of Driving While License Suspended, Revoked, or Denied Causing Serious Injury, one count of Reckless Driving Causing Serious Impairment of a Bodily Function, and one count of Moving Violation Causing Serious Impairment of a Bodily Function. *

He was arraigned March 28, 2023 in 18th District Court and given a $750,000 cash/surety bond. If released, he will be given a GPS tether. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for April 6, 2023, at 9:00 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for April 13, 2023, at 9:00 a.m., before Judge Mark McConnell.
