Macomb Community Action's 60th Anniversary Celebration

Metro Detroit Community NewsMt. Clemens, MI - Macomb Community Action is announcing a celebration marking 60 years of community action with a free event that is open to the public.

The party is scheduled for May 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Robert A. VerKuilen Building located at 21885 Dunham Road in Clinton Township and will serve as a celebration of community action in Macomb County and highlight the life-changing services that mean so much to so many in Macomb County.

"For 60 years Macomb Community Action has been a steady force in Macomb County helping individuals prosper,” said Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel. “Each day they engage our community with dignity and inclusivity, empowering residents to achieve stability in times of need.”

The celebration will feature food, fun and games for all ages. Planned activities include bingo, lawn games, music and raffle prizes.

“Community Action is all about helping drive positive, sustainable change in people’s lives,” said Andrew Cox, director/health officer of Macomb County Health and Community Services. “Positive changes on a personal level help promote broader, community-level momentum and stability. Here’s hoping this celebration extends the presence of community action in Macomb County.”

“Macomb Community Action and the services that we provide to the residents of Macomb County make a genuine difference in the lives of those we serve,” said Ed Scott, director of Macomb Community Action. “We’re proud of the work we do and see this celebration as yet another opportunity to connect with individuals and families and introduce them to resources and solutions to help them succeed – quality education programs for children, stable and affordable housing for families, utility assistance for seniors and so much more.”

In addition, the event will provide an excellent opportunity to learn more about Macomb Community Action services and resources, including:

  • Action Centers – Direct support for income-eligible residents to diminish poverty and promote independence through rent/mortgage and utility assistance and other programs.
  • Community Food Bank of Macomb County – The Macomb Food Program provides immediate, no cost relief to those in need of food through a network of more than 70 pantries and hunger relief organizations.
  • Head Start – Head Start is an early childhood development and education program for income-eligible families. The program provides a range of services for pregnant women and families with children ages 0-5.
  • Transportation – Provides transportation to essential medical appointments and other specific locations for eligible county residents.
  • Weatherization – Performs the installation of upgrades and devices to promote energy conservation and efficiency in Macomb County homes.

Event sponsors of the Community Action 60th Anniversary event include: Macomb County Veterans Services, OneMacomb and the U.S. Army Garrison/Detroit Arsenal – Child and Youth Services.
