Lansing, MI - For the past four years, the Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) Youth Corps program has improved Metro Detroit highway roadsides by engaging high school students in the business of trash pickup. The program, which begins June 18, has made an important difference in the beautification of some of the state's most heavily-traveled highways.
Students' involvement goes beyond litter cleanup. The Youth Corps targets high school students between the ages of 16 and 18, and combines hard work with a valuable learning experience. Through the program, the participants learn various aspects in career fields such as civil engineering, and other transportation-related careers. "In the few short years of the Youth Corps program, the students of Metro Detroit have had a positive effect on keeping our highways cleaned up," said Youth Corps Program Administrator Devon Buskin. "The value of this program goes beyond litter pickup. College mentors emphasize high school completion and attending college. We feel this has a positive impact on a young person. At MDOT, we are pleased to provide this opportunity for success, and look forward to a great future for the Youth." The Youth Corps program will run from June 18 until August 17.
