A graduate of Henry Ford High School in Detroit, Kelser was a collegiate star at Michigan State, where he was a first team All-American. At MSU, he helped re-define college basketball with his teammate Earvin “Magic’ Johnson. Known as “Special K,” Kelser teamed up with Magic to lead the Spartans to their first-ever NCAA basketball championship in 1979. He later played in the NBA before beginning his highly successful broadcasting career in 1988. “Special K was a phenomenal basketball player and an integral part of the Spartans’ championship run,” said Wayne County Commissioner Joseph Palamara (D-Grosse Ile). “He has been a great ambassador for the game ever since and is a tremendous role model for young kids to emulate.” “Greg Kelser was a special player on a special MSU team,” County Executive Ficano said. “As a broadcaster, he has entertained and educated fans with the same class and dignity he exhibited for many years on the basketball court.” |
