Mt. Clemens, MI - More than 40 Macomb County schools will receive recognition for their efforts to achieve Green School status through the Michigan Green Schools Program.
There are 43 schools across the Macomb County that met at least 10 of 20 criteria set by the Michigan Green Schools Program, sponsored by the Macomb County Board of Commissioners and the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD). The schools include all grade levels and both public and private schools. "We're very pleased with the response and enthusiasm for our Michigan Green Schools Program,” said Brian Brdak of New Baltimore, who sponsored the resolution creating the county’s partnership with MISD to start the program in the county. “Educating our kids about the real things they can do to help out like recycling and saving energy is one of the most important ways they will learn to protect the environment for the future." Criteria included recycling paper, newspapers, magazines and batteries, creating a birdhouse habitat and other projects to make schools more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Each school has been invited send representatives to the Macomb County Education and Training Committee meeting at noon, Wednesday, April 22, in the 9th Floor board room of the Macomb County Administration Building at 1 South Main Street in Mount Clemens. Wednesday, April 22 is Earth Day. The school representatives will receive a Green School flag for their building and a Green School certificate signed by Macomb County Board Chairman Paul Gieleghem, Gov. Jennifer Granholm, and Lt. Gov. John Cherry to display. In November 2008, the Macomb County Board of Commissioners and the Macomb Intermediate School District challenged all schools to become a Green school. |
