Macomb County Offering Free Radon Kits Print E-mail
Wednesday, 06 February 2008
Metro Detroit Health NewsMt. Clemens, MI - Macomb County residents can get free kits to test whether their home has potentially dangerous levels of cancer-causing radon gas.

“Winter is the recommended time to test because radon, if present, is more concentrated in sealed up homes,” said Gary White, environmental health director of the Macomb County Health Department. “Testing is free and easy. The risk is relatively low in Macomb County, but problems do exist, and the only way to find them is to test.”

Radon is a naturally-occurring invisible, odorless gas that is usually harmless when dispersed outdoors. When trapped in buildings, however, radon can be harmful and can cause lung cancer in humans, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Radon is occurs naturally in soil and rock. It moves upward through the soil and enters buildings through cracks and openings in the foundation floor or walls.

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, and according to the EPA, is responsible for approximately 14,000 deaths nationally each year.

Elevated levels of radon would be expected in approximately one out of 20 homes in Macomb County, said White.

“People don’t think of radon because it’s not only odorless and colorless, it also doesn’t cause symptoms such as headaches, nausea, fatigue, or skin rashes,” said White.

The free kits are available at the Macomb County Health Department offices at 43525 Elizabeth Road, Mount Clemens; and 27690 Van Dyke Ave, Warren.

For more information about radon or testing, call the Health Department at 586-469-5236 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or visit www.macombcountymi.gov/publichealth/EH/Radon.htm.
