Detroit, MI - Wayne County Commissioner Philip Cavanagh (D-Redford Township) introduced a resolution in support of state legislation that calls for a statewide ban on smoking in all public places, including bars and restaurants.
“Second-hand smoke is very toxic and deadly, and contributes greatly to heart disease, asthma and lung cancer,” said Commissioner Cavanagh. “It also costs Michigan taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars annually to treat these medical conditions. So this resolution addresses economic issues in addition to health care issues.” Three bills recently introduced in the Michigan State Legislature would ban smoking in every public facility in Michigan, except for private residences and home offices. “People across Michigan should be able to go to work, go out to eat and visit an entertainment venue without being exposed to second-hand smoke,” Cavanagh said. |
