Michigan Voters Solidly Oppose Service Tax

Detroit, MI - The Detroit Regional Chamber released results from a recent survey it commissioned with EPIC - MRA, a Lansing-based polling firm. The findings demonstrate a 55 percent majority of voters solidly oppose applying the sales tax to certain services, including 44 percent who strongly oppose it.

There were no differences based on educational level, union membership or households with children on this question. All the groups oppose the sales tax plan on services.

"It's not just the business community that opposes the service tax," said Sarah Hubbard, vice president of government relations for the Detroit Regional Chamber. "The voters clearly understand the negative impact it will have on Michigan's economic competitiveness."

Other findings show a strong 57 percent majority of voters oppose the action of the Michigan Legislature to solve the state's budget deficit by expanding the sales tax to some services and raising the income tax. A 50 percent majority favor the budget cut component of the plan, including 33 percent who strongly favor it.

The statewide EPIC - MRA poll of 623 Michigan likely presidential primary voters has a margin of error +/-4 percent.
