Michigan State Police Sergeant Arrested Print E-mail
Monday, 19 March 2007
Michigan Crime & Police NewsLansing, MI – Attorney General's office has announced the arrest of Michigan State Police Sergeant Kevin Michael Hardoin, 45, of Chesterfield Township, for using the Internet to solicit a minor and sending sexually explicit matter to a minor.

It is alleged that Hardoin was chatting online with who he thought were a 13 year-old girl and a 14 year-old girl that he met in chatrooms.  Hardoin was actually chatting with undercover Attorney General investigators.  Hardoin allegedly engaged in graphic sexual conversation with these investigators and propositioned them to watch a sexually explicit act via webcam.  On March 19, 2007, Attorney General investigators arrested Hardoin at the Michigan State Police Post in Richmond.  Attorney General investigators also seized a computer from his residence.

According to state records, Hardoin was also at one time a coordinator for the Monroe chapter of the Safe Kids program—a child accident prevention program responsible for such events as child safety seat inspections.  Parents are encouraged to check their children's "buddy lists" for the screen name(s) Hardoin used including "ragin_37".  If they believe their child had contact with Hardoin, parents should contact the Attorney General's office at (313) 456-0180.

Hardoin is currently in custody and will be arraigned later this afternoon in Mt. Clemens 42-2 District Court, on 8 accounts of Using the Computer to Accost and Solicit a Minor for Immoral Purposes, a 10-year felony, and 5 counts of Using a Computer to Disseminate Sexually Explicit Matter to a Minor, a 4-year felony.

"When criminal charges are brought against a law enforcement officer, it tarnishes the image of the entire profession,” stated Col. Peter C. Munoz, director of the Michigan State Police.  “Behavior such as this from anyone is unacceptable – let alone a law enforcement officer who is charged with protecting our children and should know better.”

With the announcement of today’s charges, Hardoin has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal charges.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Parents are encouraged to visit www.michigan.gov/ag for tips on safe Internet usage for children. Citizens can also report suspected Internet child predators via the Report Internet Abuses Against Children link, or by calling the Child and Public Protection Unit at (313) 456-0180.
