Metro Detroit Crime & Police NewsDetroit, MI - The mayor of Detroit, Kwame M. Kilpatrick,  who has been facing legal problems from a sex scandal since the beginning of the year, has plead guilty to obstruction of justice, and has resigned from office this morning as part of a deal with prosecutors.

Kilpatrick agreed to plead guilty to two felony counts of obstruction of justice and no contest to a felony count of assault on a police officer.  The other charges were dismissed.

He has also agreed to pay $1 million in restitution to the city of Detroit, to surrender his law license, and to forfeit his state pension to the city.  It's expected that he will be barred from elective office for five years and that he will serve 120 days in the Wayne County jail, followed by five year of probation.

A formal sentencing hearing is scheduled for Oct. 28.
