Moments after Judge Thomas' ruling, Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox made an announcement at a news conference that he was issuing two felony warrants against Mayor Kilpatrick for an alleged assault incident against two Wayne County Sheriff's investigators. Kilpatrick will be charged with two counts (one for each victim) of assaulting and/or obstructing a police officer from doing their duties. These charges carry penalties of up to two years in prison or a fine of $2,000. A sheriff's detective claims he was pushed into another investigator while recently trying to serve a subpoena on the mayor's friend. Cox said "The facts here are simple and straight forward. This is a simple case." Kilpatrick is already facing perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice charges for another incident in which he is accused of lying under oath while testifying at a whistle-blower lawsuit last year. Friday afternoon, Magistrate Renee McDuffee said Kilpatrick will have to post 10% of a $25,000 bond and ordered him to have no contact with witnesses in the assault case. |
