Metro Detroit Crime & Police NewsLansing, MI – The Michigan Attorney General office announced the arrest of David Andrew Griffith of Edwardsville, Kansas for using the Internet to arrange a sexual encounter with a Michigan minor.

Griffith, 46, is alleged to have been chatting online with who he thought was a 13-year-old girl that he contacted after viewing her profile.  Griffith allegedly engaged in graphic sexual conversation with an undercover agent and propositioned the agent, who was posing as a 13-year-old girl, to meet him for sex.  Furthermore, it is alleged that Griffith transmitted images of himself engaging in sexual acts, including pictures depicting beastiality.  On Wednesday, May 16, 2006, after flying to Michigan from Kansas, Griffith was arrested by Attorney General investigators in Ferndale where he is alleged to have appeared to meet the minor for sex.  Agents on scene seized a camera as well as additional evidence that allegedly could have been used for the encounter with the minor.

Griffith is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon at 43rd District Court in Ferndale on one count of Child Sexually Abusive Activity, a 20-year felony; one count of Using the Internet to Commit Child Sexually Abusive Activity, also a 20-year felony; and six counts of Using the Internet to Commit Dissemination of Sexually Explicit Matter to a Minor, a 4-year felony.

Parents are encouraged to check their children's "buddy lists" for the screen name(s) Griffith used including "looking4knotie."  If they believe their child had contact with Griffith, parents should contact the Attorney General's office at (313) 456-0180.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Since its restructuring, Michigan's Child and Public Protection Unit has arrested 132 Internet sexual predators. Attorney General Mike Cox encourages parents to visit www.michigan.gov/ag for tips on safe Internet usage for children.  Citizens can also report suspected Internet child predators via the Report Internet Abuses Against Children link, or by calling the Child and Public Protection Unit at (313) 456-0180.
