Metro Detroit Crime & Police NewsDetroit, MI - Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged Jason Alexander Gibson, 25 of Detroit in connection with the May 3, 2010 shooting on the 20000 block of Schoenherr in Detroit that resulted in the death of Detroit Police Officer Brian Huff and the injury of five other Detroit Police Department officers.

On Monday, May 3, 2010 Officers Steven Schram and Kasper Harrison responded to a radio dispatch run of a breaking and entering in progress, shots fired. Two other units responded as back-up units; one car was manned by Officers Joseph D’Angelo and Brian Huff, and the other car was manned by Officers Brian Glover and John Dunlap. As other officers were securing the outside of the house, Officer Huff went to the front door. He announced the presence of the Detroit police and walked inside. Shots were immediately heard and Officer Huff was fatally wounded. The defendant exited the house and continued firing shots. Several of the officers returned fire and the defendant was struck by a bullet in the buttocks.

Officer Kasper Harrison was treated for a gunshot wound to the right arm; Officer Steven Schram was treated for a gunshot wound to the left foot; Officer John Dunlap was treated for a gunshot wound to the right shin; Officer Joseph D’Angelo was treated for a gunshot wound to the upper right thigh, and Officer Brian Glover was treated for knee injury he received while trying to assist Officer Brian Huff.

“The Detroit police family has suffered a loss just as too many other families in our city have suffered. In memory of Officer Huff, we are re-dedicating ourselves to making sure avoidable tragedies like this never again occur. To accomplish this, however, citizens and public officials alike must summon the will to fix our broken and under funded criminal justice system,” said Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans.

“For those of us in law enforcement there is really no greater tragedy than an officer being slain in the line of duty. This case highlights that every day officers are putting their lives on the line for us,” said Prosecutor Worthy. “In this case, as in all others, we examined all of the evidence in order to issue these charges. We are confident that we are able to meet our burden of proof in the case against the defendant.”

The Detroit Police Department will be making arrangements for the defendant to be arraigned.
