Tips & Guidelines For Keeping Detroit Clean Print E-mail
Wednesday, 11 April 2007
Metro Detroit Community NewsDetroit, MI - As Detroit prepares for Motor City Makeover 2007, the city is reminding residents to keep in mind city guidelines and tips to keep the city clean year round.

“It’s important for everyone to chip in and do their part to keep neighborhoods clean as we move towards the NEXT Detroit,” said Cathy Square, Department of Public Works (DPW) director. “The Mayor empowered us during the 2007 State of the City Address to take ownership of our communities, and the city has provided all the tools to aid residents in cleanup efforts. Now it’s up to Detroiters to accept the call and keep our city beautiful year round.”

THE DO’S & DON’TS OF LITTER COLLECTION

Do:
•Collect paper, empty bottles/cans and street sweepings.
•Wear hard-soled shoes, long pants, long-sleeved shirts and gloves.
•Work in your assigned cleanup area(s).
•Bring your own, clearly identified cleaning equipment.

Do Not:
•Put out bulk items (stoves, mattresses, construction debris, etc.)
•Put bagged litter at the curb
•Attempt to move or stack abandoned tires.
•Pick up sharp objects or items that may be dangerous.
•Enter onto private property without the owner’s permission.
•Collect liquids.
•Enter industrial buildings, construction/demolition sites or freeways.
•Work in streets or high-traffic areas.

Motor City Makeover is Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s annual spring cleaning initiative designed to clean up the city and create a community cohesiveness that fosters greater respect and appreciation for one's neighborhood.

Sectors to be cleaned during the bagged liter campaign include: (see attached map):
Saturday, May 5 -- Sectors 1, 2 and 3
Saturday, May 12 -- Sectors 4, 5 and 6
Saturday, May 19 -- Sectors 7, 8, 9 and 10

Citizens, schools, churches, businesses, or community organizations wishing to volunteer for Motor City Makeover are required to call 313-224-4415, sign up online at www.ci.detroit.mi.us or contact their local Neighborhood City Hall to register with the City and get specific drop off locations.

There will be no curbside pickup of bagged litter. Individuals or groups who leave bagged litter in locations NOT designated by the City of Detroit may receive a fine of up to $10,000 for illegal dumping.

Community organizations can request a roll-off container to handle large cleanups, by calling their neighborhood city hall.
