Metro Detroit Community NewsDetroit, MI - During the summer, it is important that Detroit residents prepare for a safe outdoor experience. In keeping with that emphasis, the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion (DHWP) will host its monthly Public Health Grand Rounds on Wednesday, July 11 focusing on Outbreak: Fact, Myth, or Legend about Bird Flu and West Nile Virus.

Donald Hamel, local expert in the field of environmental health, will help families and health care providers know how to enjoy the outdoors in the summer and in close quarters in the winter. The seminar will define the roles of the DHWP in education, prevention and surveillance of the Bird Flu and West Nile Virus. July has been declared by the Michigan Department of Community Health as “Bats, Bugs, and Bacteria Month.”

“The world is getting smaller everyday and what happens in one part of the world today will be occurring in Detroit tomorrow,” said Dr. Anita Moncrease, DHWP Medical Director and Grand Rounds chair. “There are some simple steps that everyone should take when enjoying the outdoors.”

Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the seminar will run from 9:15 - 10:15 a.m. in the auditorium of the Herman Kiefer Health Complex, 1151 Taylor St. in Detroit. The seminar is open to the public.

For more information, please contact Dr. Moncrease at 313-876-4303.
