Metro Detroit Community NewsDetroit, MI - Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick encourages residents, community groups, businesses and faith-based organizations to participate in the annual Motor City Makeover bag-litter campaign Saturday May 5, May 12, and May 19.

“This is the sixth year we have implemented this initiative, so we have set a goal to recruit 65,000 volunteers to clean up 6,000 tons of litter,” Mayor Kilpatrick said. “We are asking all of our neighborhoods, businesses, community groups and youth to take ownership in our communities by making it clean and beautiful.”

Motor City Makeover is the Mayor’s annual spring cleaning initiative designed to clean up the city and create a community cohesiveness that fosters greater respect and appreciation for one's neighborhood.

During last month’s State of the City Address, Mayor Kilpatrick called on residents to be more engaged in neighborhood improvement efforts. “It’s not just the Mayor’s problem," stated Mayor Kilpatrick. "I fully accept my responsibility in it, but I can’t do this on my own. I need, and we need an aroused, engaged and mobilized community.”

Individuals and community groups must register with the City of Detroit to get information about where to drop off their bagged litter after cleaning.

The sectors to be cleaned during the effort are:
Saturday, May 5 -- Sectors 1, 2, and 3
Saturday, May 12 -- Sectors 4,5 and 6
Saturday, May 19 -- Sectors 7, 8, 9, and 10

Citizens or community groups that need more information, or wish to volunteer, can call the volunteer hotline at (313) 224-4415, visit their local Neighborhood City Hall or register online.

During the 2006 Motor City Makeover campaign, the hard work of more than 60,000 volunteers resulted in more than 5,000 tons of trash being picked up.
