Wednesday, 16 April 2008
Metro Detroit Community NewsMt. Clemens, MI - People looking to get rid of old computer equipment, unwanted medication or household hazardous waste can drop it off at a collection event in Armada and do their part to help protect water supplies.

The household hazardous waste and computer collection is 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at the Armada Fairgrounds, 74280 Fair St. The event is sponsored by the Macomb County Health Department, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Great Lakes Recycling, Waste Management Inc. and the Michigan Department of Agriculture’s Clean Sweep Program.

Macomb County residents may dispose of old computer components, including monitors, desktop computers, laptops, scanners, printers and keyboards. No equipment will be accepted from schools or businesses.

People also are invited to drop off unwanted household chemicals, pesticides and herbicides. Automotive products (motor oil and oil filters, gasoline, battery acid and fluids), garden products (pesticides, poisons, sprays and dusts) and household products (oven cleaners, pool chemicals, photo chemicals, fluorescent tubes, household batteries, oil-based paint and solvents) will be accepted.

One free environmentally friendly fluorescent tube or compact fluorescent light, per household, will be exchanged for any fluorescent tube delivered.

Unwanted non-narcotic medications also will be accepted. Pharmaceuticals must be placed in unmarked containers such as a plastic bag.
The following materials will not be accepted: Smoke detectors, latex paint, explosives, ammunition, flares, narcotic medications and electronic equipment such as televisions, radios and appliances.

All materials, except for medications, should be labeled or kept in their original containers. People should not mix chemicals or transport leaking containers.

For more information, contact the Macomb County Health Department’s Household Hazardous Waste Hotline at 586-466-7923 or visit www.macombcountymi.gov. This program is for Macomb County residents only.
