Metro Detroit Community NewsWashington Twp., MI - The Macomb County Health Department is conducting a household hazardous waste collection from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, August 23 at the Washington Township Municipal Offices, 57900 Van Dyke Ave. north of 26 Mile Road in Washington Township.

Macomb County residents may drop off unwanted or unused household chemicals, pesticides and herbicides. Automotive products (motor oil and oil filters, gasoline, battery acid and fluids), garden products (pesticides, poisons, sprays and dusts) and household products (oven cleaners, pool chemicals, photography chemicals, fluorescent tubes, household batteries, oil based paint and solvents) will be accepted.

One free environmentally friendly fluorescent tube or compact fluorescent light, per household, will be exchanged for any fluorescent tube delivered.

Computer components such as monitors, CPUs, scanners, printers and keyboards will be accepted from residents only; no schools or commercial entities may participate.

Other types of electronic equipment such as televisions, radios and other appliances will not be accepted.

The following items also will not be accepted: smoke detectors, latex paint, antifreeze, explosives, ammunition and flares. Do no mix chemicals or transport leaking containers.

Unwanted medications, including narcotics, will be accepted. People must remove pills from bottles and place them in a clear plastic bag. The Macomb County Sheriff Department will be accepting controlled substances such as narcotic painkillers and stimulants will be accepted at this site, but must be kept in a separate plastic bag.

For additional information, contact the Macomb County Health Department’s Household Hazardous Waste Hotline at 586-466-7923.

This project is made possible by the Macomb County Board of Commissioners and the Michigan Department of Agriculture’s Clean Sweep Program.
