The wells, located near I-94 and Middlebelt, would inject toxic waste into the ground from sources throughout the Great Lakes and Canada. “Ever since I took office in 2003, I have consistently opposed both these wells and additional waste from Canada,” said Ficano. “Together with our residents and other regional leaders, Wayne County will renew its opposition to the wells and do whatever it can at the federal and state levels – and in the courts – to keep this operation out of our neighborhoods.” Ficano testified at EPA and MDEQ public hearings on earlier attempts to open the deep injection wells, and authorized a lawsuit against the wells’ former operators in March of 2006. Ficano plans to file formal objections with the EPA and MDEQ in the coming weeks, and will provide County testimony at any future public hearings on the permit application. |
