Michigan Community NewsLansing, MI - The Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) announced the 50th Annual Bridge Walk will begin at 7 a.m. this Labor Day, Sept. 3.

Since 1958, thousands of walkers have crossed the Michigan landmark each year creating a memorable and scenic tradition for many. Walkers will begin the five-mile trek in St. Ignace and cross the finish line in Mackinaw City.

MBA officials expect upwards of 50,000 people will come to the Straits area for the milestone walk event. Walkers are encouraged to check out event details online at www.mackinacbridge.org.

Prior to the walk, Gov. Granholm will lead a select group of 300 runners across the bridge in conjunction with the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness (GCPF). The early-morning GCPF event will take place as a way to promote the importance of exercise and physical fitness for people of all ages.

Additionally, more than 50 swimmers will attempt to cross the Straits one-by-one beginning at 6:30 a.m. Ultra-marathon athlete and Great Lakes swimmer Jim Dreyer organized the unique and inspiring swim as a fundraiser for Mentor Michigan, an organization geared toward supporting and enhancing mentoring programs for Michigan's youth.
